Zach's Bike Rebuild
« on: 07/25/09 10:10PM »
OOOOOk, so as most of you know, I got the ugliest bike in town. Actually, I'm kinda partial to my ugly duckling, but I was given the oppurtunity to rebuild it, and so I sank my teeth into it and ordered basically everything I needed/wanted. I left off some upgrades that some of you would probably do right off the bat, but I left those because I either couldn't find what I was looking for right then, couldn't justify the money for the gain, or simply just wanted to have something to look forward to in the future. So, here we go with what I got done so far.

Below is a how the bike set before anything was done, this picture was taken the day I was late to PC with ya'll and decided to go urban exploring.

First up, I got some Vortex rear sets. These come adjustable, which is great because I got a bum left knee and my stockers were kinda killing me, my knees were always loaded with my weight. Very easy to put on, and I no longer am gonna dirty up my white kicks as much with my shifter ;D

I also got some nice Vortex clip ons. Some of ya'll were there for my jackass stunt across Tennessee St. where I slid my bike across 3 lanes of traffic, killing my right stock clip on and tail light. The great thing about these, besides being able to adjust them, is if I thrash one, it only costs me $16 for a new tube!

Same day I got the Vortex crap, I also got my racebody from Sharkskinz.com. This is seriously the finest fiberglass craftsmanship I've seen for the price, and am VERY happy with this investment. Great thing about this is, 1. I have no headlight holes, so I can do whatever I want (was also cheaper to buy this than two stock Honda lights) and 2. if I crack these, they are easily repairable ( I can hold my own with some fiberglass mat and epoxy). Also, a rear cowl for the Honda is $130, and for $200 I picked up a one-piece race tail. Well worth the investment in my book.

Unfortunately, I was hoping I could match my stock lower fairing to my sharkskinz upper, but to make the lower stronger, skarkskinz stole a little from the upper with their design. So I gotta wait about a week to get up the money to order my lower (AMA approved)

Today I got in my TripageLED.com race fairing stay. This is the part that holds your instrument panel to the bike, and also bolts the upper fairing to the bike. I bought a race one because Honda's stock one costs something like $250, where this one costs $135 shipped. Also I am losing a LOT of weight here, since this is just an aluminum tube and plate instead of a big bulky plastic unit. It does not have tabs for headlights, since they aren't allowed on the track, and it won't hold my BAS (tip-over) sensor, so he threw in a relocation bracket that's supposed to move the BAS down to a spot between a heatsink on the frame and my radiator. It wound up not working because it wasn't bent right, but that's ok since I plan on making my own (the space was too tight for my chubby fingers)

First pic is the fairing stay itself, second is his business card (check out his LED work, it's intense) , third is the relocation bracket that wound up not working, and fourth is the BAS sensor. The BAS has to stay upright in order for the bike to work, if it tips to a certain point it cuts off the motor, much like an Oil Alert system on a Briggs and Stratton lawn engine.

That's pretty impressive.  That thing is going to look awesome when you're done.  What color are you going to paint it, if you decide to?

Thanks. I'm gonna paint it a dark navy blue. I tried taking a picture of the color sample I have, but my camera on my blackberry isn't THAT good lol. I got my Pazzo levers and Driven grips today, I'll put up pic later when I get to my computer. Still waiting on my throttle assembly though :(

I'm sure you'll be babying your bike, so it may actually make you a little slower.  ;D
