Yeah, screwing up a wheelie at 15 mph is much better than screwing one up at 65+ mph. By the time you hit the power band, even in first gear on a 600, you're already at 60 mph and climbing quickly!
I tried clutching up in 1st and 2nd on my 600 before I finally tried (and succeeded... and FAILED miserably) a power wheelie. Didn't have much luck with clutch wheelies, but I believe I was putting too much weight on the handlebars. That's not a problem with a power wheelie. You could be sitting on the handlebars and probably still lift the front wheel to 12 o'clock in 1st gear.
